As the Gospers Mountain Fire slowly crept down through the Wollemi National Park, communities in the Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury regions waited and watched.

But it wasn' the main fire that ended up burning them out - it was a backburn carried out with little warning in poor fire conditions.
